- Free in-app tracker too
Eight columns, a status drop-down, a filter row and follow-up dates that turn amber when a check-in is due.
What's in the job tracker spreadsheet
One row per application, and a second sheet that explains each column.
| Column | What goes in it |
|---|---|
| Company | Who's hiring. |
| Role | The job title as the posting writes it. |
| Job link | The posting, so you can reread it before an interview. |
| Date applied | The day you sent it. |
| Status | Pick from the list, so you can filter and count. |
| Contact | The recruiter or hiring manager, and how you reached them. |
| Follow-up date | When to check in. The cell turns amber once that day arrives. |
| Notes | Salary range, referral, interview dates, anything worth remembering. |
Statuses: Saved, Applied, Screening, Interviewing, Offer, Rejected, Withdrawn, No response. Picking from a list instead of typing keeps them consistent, so a filter on “Interviewing” finds every interview.
How to use it in Google Sheets
To keep the status drop-down, use the Excel file:
- Download the .xlsx above.
- Upload it to Google Drive (New, then File upload).
- Right-click it in Drive and choose Open with, then Google Sheets.
- Choose File, then Save as Google Sheets, so your edits stay in Sheets.
To start from the CSV: open a blank sheet, choose File, then Import, then Upload, and pick the CSV. To add the drop-down, select the Status column, choose Data, then Data validation, then Dropdown, and enter the statuses above.
How to use it in Excel
- Open the .xlsx and delete the grey example row.
- Add a row the day you apply: company, role, link, date and “Applied”.
- Put a follow-up date about a week out. When that day comes, the cell turns amber until the status changes to Offer, Rejected or Withdrawn.
- Use the filter arrows on the header row to see only Applied or Interviewing.
- Paste the posting's text into Notes or a document. Postings come down, often before the interview.
Why track your applications at all
A search today means a lot of applications, and many go quiet. Without a list, you can't tell which ones to follow up on, which résumé you sent, or whether anything is working.
applications now go into a single hire, nearly triple the roughly 100 of early 2021.
Ashby, 2026
of job seekers say an employer has ghosted them; the most common moment is right after submitting the application.
iHire, 2025
A tracker turns that into a routine: follow up when the date comes, close out what's dead, and see which kinds of roles call you back. For how many to send, read how many jobs to apply to per week, and for the follow-up itself, the follow-up email templates.

Start tracking freeQuestions people ask
What should a job application tracker include?
At least the company, the role, a link to the posting, the date you applied, a status, who you talked to, when to follow up and notes. The free template has those eight columns and a status list: Saved, Applied, Screening, Interviewing, Offer, Rejected, Withdrawn, No response.
Is there a job application tracker for Google Sheets?
Yes. Upload the Excel file to Google Drive and open it with Google Sheets to keep the status drop-down, or import the CSV into a new sheet and add the drop-down yourself with Data, then Data validation.
How do I track job applications in Excel?
Download the .xlsx, delete the example row, and add a row for each job you apply to. Pick the status from the drop-down, use the filter arrows on the header row to see only active applications, and watch for amber follow-up dates: that's a check-in that's due.
When should I follow up on a job application?
About a week after you apply is a common rule of thumb. If the posting or the recruiter gave a timeline, wait until it has passed. Put the date in the Follow-up column when you apply so you don't have to remember it.
Is OneResume's job tracker free?
Yes. The tracker board is free with an account, and every job you tailor a résumé for in OneResume lands on it with that résumé. The free plan includes 2 free rewrites your first month, then 1 a month, so to track more jobs than that for free, use the spreadsheet alongside it.
Do I need to give my email to download the template?
No. Both files download straight from this page, with no account and no email.
Can I import my spreadsheet into OneResume?
Not yet. The OneResume tracker fills itself as you tailor résumés for jobs, so you don't type the company, role and link twice.
